FEMM's debut album ''FEMM-Isation'' available worldwide + Review of album
Japanese duo FEMM (Far East Mention Mannequins) debuted in November 2013, they started officially releasing singles and music videos in April of this year. From there every week or two, they would drop new music, over the span of seven months. Now its October, on the 1st of this month the girls released their debut album "FEMM-lsation" internationally. It contains all 13 tracks (all of them have music videos, go check out their official Youtube channel), which features some enjoyable electronic, rock, pop, and R&B tracks crafted from some of the industry's well-known producers. That list includes Evan Bogart, Bryan Michael Cox, Nicole Tranquillo, Andreas Carlsson and many more. Remember all the music is sung in English, so it won't be hard to understand their material. I did a mini-album review, check it out after the jump.
There's a variety of genres that could cater to any type of listener. They've taken over electro-pop with songs like "Party All Night" and bubbly ballad "We Flood The Night". "Party All Night" is super catchy, pacifically the being the chorus, you'll find yourself singing along: "You know, I know, if you want it, I'll take you home, 'cause you're gonna party all night". More club-oriented tracks would be "White Noise" and "Girls Night Out". Some simple straight forward pop tracks are "Kill The DJ" (kill the DJ play my song :P) and FEMM's debut single is "Astro Boy" featuring the duo's agents Honey-B and W-Trouble. Both of them sound like Dr. Luke produced records. "Astro Boy" is very guitar-heavy, which is one of most appealing traits about it. Those songs has potential to go mainstream, due to the lyrically content and production.
FEMM sings different types of songs with different meanings, a subject that seems to be important to them is empowering woman. They manage to represent all the ladies on "Dead Wrong" and the trap urban-pop "Fxxk Boyz Get Money". It serves as their most memorable track and this is what really got FEMM known worldwide. They've stated interviews that the song is open to interpatation. The message I get from it is 'Fuck boyz and get money instead ladies!!!!', its the anthem of the year for females. Definitely one of my favorites, that track can't be denied by anyone. You also have several other highlights electro-rock infused "Wannabe", dark R&B-pop track about control "The Real Thing", a softer mid-tempo electro track "Kiss The Rain", but if you're wanting to listen to an actual ballad "Unbreakable" would be the choose. For those who've been following FEMM, since the beginning it was surprising to see them change from releasing uptempo after uptempo to revealing a vulnerable song and image. The song consist of piano and string production, that focus only on the vocals. Noticeably their was no use of autotune, which is used for most of their music. So it was refreshing to hear how their singing voices, without all that extra stuff thrown in. Last song revealed from this era was "Whiplash". On the first listen I liked it, but thought it could've been a stronger single. Since then it has grown on me. Verse: "You took your own road" / "But you got lost though" / "I hate to say it" / "That was a no-no". Lyrically from my point of view, the describes a relationship where the guy is doing whatever he wants and faces the consequences for his actions. Chorus: "I told you slow down" / "You're going too fast" / "Cause if you hit the gas" / "You're getting whiplash". I could be wrong, but that's what I take away from the song. Like many of their music videos, this was the most unique and entertaining to watch. The camera techniques and the choreography will be first to catch your attention.

Slowing releasing each song, before putting album out was a great promotional campaign for someone who debuting. By revealing each of them one by one, with them of many genre, you get steer all types of listeners your way. It also bring antipatation for the next song awaiting release. I know for me, I was always excited for what FEMM was going to reveal. Overall, this a great fun pop album. FEMM already has an decent fanbase, but they still have a long way to go. If you like Perfume, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, a J-Pop fan, or just a regular Pop then this duo is for you. Speaking of Perfume, their like the (classy) ratchet version of them LOL.
Highlights: Wannabe | Fxxk Boyz Get Money | Whiplash | Kiss The Rain | Party All Night
